Municipal Custody Release Routes

Municipal police lockups and short-term holding refer to the brief custody that can occur after an arrest and before release, court, or transfer to the county jail. Savannah, Pooler, Garden City, Port Wentworth, Tybee Island, Thunderbolt, Bloomingdale, Vernonburg, and other local agencies may take part in an arrest. That does not establish that each city runs a public long-term jail, release archive, or roster.

The destination controls the record. If the person was booked into Chatham County Jail, the Sheriff's booking, release, and discharge records document that custody event. If a local matter stayed with a municipal agency or Recorder's Court, the arresting agency record and court disposition can be the lasting sources. A person may also be cited, released after a short hold, transferred, or taken to court. No single phone number, address, roster, or set of hours can safely be assigned to all such events.

Confirm Municipal Custody Release

The Chatham Sheriff booking feeds show an agency field alongside DIN, name, arrest date, arrest number, bond, and charges. Research examples include Savannah Police Department, Chatham County Police Department, Pooler Police Department, Thunderbolt Municipal Court, Chatham County Recorder's Court, State Court, Superior Court probation, and other holds. That range is why a name-only search can lead to the wrong office.

1. Identify the arresting agency from paperwork, the Sheriff booking feed, or the court record.
2. Determine whether the person entered Chatham County Jail or stayed in a municipal or court process.
3. For a county booking, capture the DIN and arrest number and contact Sheriff's Jail Records.
4. For a municipal matter, search the correct court and contact the arresting agency's records unit.
5. If another agency took custody, continue with that agency rather than calling the municipal exit a community release.

The official 72-hour Sheriff booking page can retain a recent event after the one-day view rolls off, but it is still not a confirmed release list.

Municipal Release Record Sources

Use this source map after the agency is known. Each row names the record owner, not a claim that every case will be publicly available in full. The Chatham Magistrate Court Clerk is the official route for that court's criminal docket and preliminary-hearing records.

A court disposition can show dismissal, fine, probation, time served, sentence, or another outcome. It may explain why custody ended. The booking or agency record is still needed when the exact release time, destination, or transfer is the issue. Note: disappearance from a short booking window can also mean that the entry aged out.

Municipal Custody Contact Routing

No sourced unified Savannah-area municipal holding office exists for this page. The contact card therefore identifies the only shared, sourced route: Chatham County Jail contacts when a municipal arrest led to a Sheriff booking. City-specific records stay with the city or agency that created them.

For a city-police record that never became a county jail record, use that city's records process. Chatham County's 311 open-records article specifically notes that City of Savannah records use a separate city JustFOIA route. Do not send a city-only police request to county jail records unless the Sheriff actually held the person.

Recorder's Court Release Records

The Chatham County Recorder's Court search provides an online path for certain matters. Search options include citation, driver's license, vehicle information, name, and business name. That court source can outlast a short custody event and may show the case path tied to a municipal arrest or citation. For broader court navigation, use Georgia Courts E-Access and the official re:SearchGA portal.

Recorder's Court is not a jail roster. Its record can establish a hearing, payment matter, violation, or disposition, but it should not be used to infer the exact minute a person left a holding area. If the record shows that the person was booked at Chatham County Jail, pair it with the Sheriff's release record. If the matter remained with the municipal process, pair it with the arresting agency record. The Chatham Superior Court Clerk and its Criminal Division are the official sources when a matter belongs in Superior Court.

Municipal Bond Release Records

A bond amount on the Sheriff's page can point to a possible route out of county jail, but it cannot prove payment or release. A municipal arrest that reaches Chatham County Jail follows the Sheriff's bonding procedures for that jail event. The official page lists a $20 non-refundable fee on all bonds, accepted payment categories, identification requirements, and the rule that the detention center does not take payments by phone.

Bond release leaves the criminal matter open in many cases. The court record should be checked for the next date and final disposition. Chatham's cash-bond return process shows that link: the payer must provide valid identification and certified proof of court disposition signed by a judge or clerk. Certain municipal dispositions require contact with the jurisdiction that handled the funds.

No guaranteed municipal release-processing time was found. Payment, court entry, document review, local holds, outside holds, and transfer arrangements can all affect when custody changes. Use the responsible agency's record rather than promising a same-day or after-court release.

Municipal Court Record Limits

Georgia's Open Records Act favors public access, but exemptions and court rules still matter. Juvenile records, sealed cases, restricted criminal history, protected personal data, medical information, and active-investigation material can limit what a police agency or court releases. A blank search result can therefore mean several things and should not be translated into a release claim.

Georgia calls many expungement questions record restriction. O.C.G.A. § 35-3-37 allows restriction of qualifying criminal-history records through the applicable process. For an arrest after July 1, 2013, the GBI directs the person to the prosecutor. For an older arrest, the process can begin with the arresting agency. Because municipal agencies differ, the jurisdiction of arrest remains important.

Ask for a narrow event record. Supply the full name, date of birth if known, agency, arrest or citation number, approximate date, and specific record sought. A focused request helps the custodian locate the right municipal, court, or Sheriff record without treating all Savannah-area agencies as one system.

Municipal Transfer Release Checks

An exit from a police holding area can be the start of another custody event. Transfer to Chatham County Jail is the most important local example. Once booked there, the Sheriff owns the jail custody record. A court may then order bond, release, time served, probation, or further detention. The arresting city remains the source for its own incident and arrest records.

Other transfers require other systems. A state-custody hold points to GDC after acceptance. A federal matter may involve USMS before BOP designation and may need the federal docket. Immigration custody requires ICE's person-level locator or DHS-VINELink where applicable. Another county hold requires that county's jail. The agency field and court docket help choose among them.
