Chatham County Release Meanings
A Chatham County jail release marks the end or change of one custody event. It does not answer every question about the criminal case. Someone may leave Chatham County Jail after bond is posted, a court orders release, a sentence ends, or a charge is dismissed. Another person may leave because Georgia Department of Corrections, a different county, federal officers, or immigration authorities take custody. The Sheriff's jail record documents the county exit. A court docket explains the order or case result, while the receiving agency documents any transfer that follows.
The distinction matters once a name drops from the short public booking window. A missing name is not proof of community release. The person may have aged out of the web view, moved under a hold, or entered another system. For Chatham County released inmates, the useful question is not only “Are they gone from this list?” It is “Which agency held them next, and which record explains the change?” That approach prevents a transfer from being mistaken for discharge.

Death in custody and extradition pickup are also possible custody-ending events, but neither should be labeled an ordinary community release. The release reason and destination field, when available, are therefore as important as the date. Chatham County Release Record Fields

Online visibility and record retention are different. The Sheriff's site offers short booking windows, but the underlying jail and court records may remain available after a name leaves those pages. A certified or official answer comes from the agency that created the record, not from the temporary web display.
Request Chatham County Release Records
Chatham County accepts online open-records requests through its JustFOIA public portal. The county's open-records information says online submissions began in November 2024. For a jail release, a narrow request should identify the person and booking event, then ask for the booking sheet with release date and reason or the release and discharge record. - Collect the full name, date of birth if known, DIN, arrest number, arresting agency, and approximate booking or release date.
- Choose the Sheriff or correct county record custodian in the portal. A City of Savannah police record may use a separate city request path.
- Describe the record precisely. Ask for the release date, time, reason, destination, holds, and the booking identifier tied to that event.
- Request a cost estimate before extensive search, retrieval, redaction, or copying work. No single Sheriff release-record fee schedule was found.
- Compare the response with the relevant court or receiving-agency record before treating the custody outcome as final.

The portal provides a written fallback when the short booking windows no longer display the event. Georgia law permits lawful charges for search, retrieval, redaction, and copies, so the custodian may send an estimate. The research does not establish one fixed Sheriff response time or release-record price.
Georgia Laws on Chatham Records
O.C.G.A. § 50-18-70 states Georgia's strong policy favoring open government and a presumption that public records should be available without delay. That baseline supports access to many Chatham County jail, booking, and release materials. It is not an assurance that every field will be released. O.C.G.A. § 50-18-72 contains exemptions, and other rules protect material such as juvenile, medical, sealed, restricted, personal, or active-investigation information.
Georgia uses “record restriction” for many issues often called expungement. Under O.C.G.A. § 35-3-37, qualifying criminal-history records may be restricted after the required approval and process. The GBI says post-July 2013 arrests generally require contact with the prosecutor, while earlier arrests use the arresting agency process. Restriction should not be assumed to erase every jail, court, agency, or news reference. The correct court, prosecutor, arresting agency, and GBI process controls each record.
Chatham County Bond Release Steps
Bonding is a locally documented Chatham County release route. The Sheriff's bonding procedures list cash, Visa or MasterCard debit and credit cards, money orders, cashier checks, approved bonding-company bonds, online cash bond, property bonds, and approved out-of-county bonds. Every bond carries a $20 non-refundable bonding fee. The detention center does not accept payments by phone, and government-issued photo identification is required in several transactions.
The official procedure also explains why posting bond and walking out are not one instant event. Payment method, approval, identification, a property title search, an outside bond, a hold, or after-hours processing can affect the path. Card use has listed charges, including $2.50 when paying the bond fee by card and 10 percent of the total when a card covers the bond and fee. A nonzero bond in the booking feed shows a possible route, not proof that payment occurred or release was completed.

After bond release, the criminal case remains important. The docket can show the next hearing and later disposition. Jail release alone does not mean the charge was dismissed or the case ended.
Chatham Release Records and Courts
Chatham County has several court routes because the arresting agency and charge determine where a case proceeds. The Chatham County Courts portal links to re:SearchGA for public case information and eFiled documents. The Superior Court Criminal Division also points users to that system. Recorder's Court provides its own online violation search, while Magistrate Court handles warrant applications, preliminary hearings, and criminal docket questions through its clerk.
A court record can explain a release long after the booking window rolls forward. It may show a bond order, dismissal, plea, sentence, time-served credit, probation ruling, revocation, or transfer-related order. The arresting-agency field on the Sheriff feed is a useful routing clue. Savannah Police, Pooler Police, Chatham County Police, Recorder's Court, State Court, Superior Court probation, and outside holds can point to different record owners.

Chatham Bond Returns After Release
Chatham's cash-bond return rules create a second records task after release. The Sheriff's procedure requires valid government-issued photo identification from the payer and a certified proof of disposition signed by the judge or clerk. Requests are accepted on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Completed requests are listed as ready after two business days once the original required documents have been received and validated.
That process connects the release record, court disposition, and the person who paid the bond. Certain municipal dispositions require contact with that jurisdiction for funds. The right clerk therefore depends on where the case ended. A person can be out of Chatham County Jail while the bond-return process remains incomplete because the court has not issued final proof of disposition or the paperwork belongs with another jurisdiction.

Search Chatham County Released Inmates
A reliable search starts with custody type and timing. The Sheriff's booking pages help with a recent county event. They do not serve as a long release archive. GDC applies to Georgia state custody, the Parole Board explains tentative and final parole action, and DCS handles felony community supervision. Federal cases use the federal docket and BOP locator. Immigration custody requires ICE or DHS tools. Court and open-records channels fill the gaps.
- Check the Sheriff's 24-hour and 72-hour booking views for a recent county booking. Save the DIN, arrest number, agency, charges, bond, and arrest date.
- Ask Jail Records or Receiving and Discharge whether the person left Chatham custody and request the release reason or destination.
- Check the court system for the bond, disposition, sentence, probation, dismissal, or transfer order tied to the booking.
- Use Georgia VINE for a custody-status change or notification. Treat it as an alert source, then verify with the agency.
- Search GDC and parole sources only when state custody is involved. Use BOP, ICE, or DHS sources for those separate systems.
- Submit a focused records request when no online source provides the release date, type, or destination.
Chatham GDC Release Search
The Georgia Department of Corrections Find an Offender page is the statewide route for a person in GDC custody. It matters in Chatham County when someone leaves the jail for state custody or when someone is released from Coastal State Prison or a transition placement. A county-jail-only release may never appear. GDC also warns that photos display automatically when available and asks users to verify information through written correspondence with Inmate Records and Information.

Chatham Recent Booking Windows
The Sheriff publishes official 24-hour and 72-hour booking views. These are booking and incarceration windows, not official release lists. Entries may include DIN, name, birth date, race, sex, arrest date, arrest number, agency, bond, and charges. A person who disappears may have aged out of the window. The change alone does not establish release.

Chatham Release Supervision and Reentry
Georgia separates parole decisions from community supervision. The State Board of Pardons and Paroles decides parole and publishes inmate TPM and parolee search paths. The Georgia Department of Community Supervision supervises felony probationers and parolees. Its Savannah field office serves Chatham and the Eastern Circuit at 15 Mersey Way, Savannah, GA 31405, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Coastal State Prison adds a local reentry layer. GDC identifies the prison as host to the Coastal Transition Center and lists programs including Intensive Re-Entry, residential substance-abuse treatment, faith and character work, and supportive living units for ADA inmates. A transition-center placement can be a step toward community return while the person remains within the state corrections and supervision framework. It must not be treated as a release from Chatham County Jail.

Chatham Release Notifications by Custody
Georgia VINE supplies custody status and notification for participating state and local sources. Search the specific person, compare the agency and identifiers, open the correct record, and register for phone, email, text, or app alerts if the current interface offers them. A notification signals a change. The Sheriff, GDC, or court still owns the official release detail.
Federal prison releases use the BOP Inmate Locator. BOP records from 1982 forward may show “Released” or “Not in BOP custody” and a release date. BOP notes that First Step Act recalculations can affect dates. A federal pretrial detainee may not yet be in BOP, since the U.S. Marshals Service handles custody and transport before designation. In that situation, the federal docket is the practical public route.
Registry searches are narrower. Chatham SORT and the GBI registry cover qualifying registered offenders, not all Chatham County released inmates. A registry match confirms a registration status, not the reason or date of an ordinary jail release.
Chatham Immigration Release Transfers
Chatham's USCIS Bookings page is a distinctive local custody source. It reports monthly aggregate outcomes under Referred, Cleared, Detained, and No Response. It does not list people. Those totals show why a departure from county jail may not be community release when an immigration referral or detainer leads to another custody event.

Person-level confirmation requires the ICE Online Detainee Locator System or DHS-VINELink when applicable. Never assign an aggregate category to an individual. County release means only that Chatham custody ended. The person may be cleared, transferred, detained elsewhere, or not covered by the report at all.

Chatham County Release Facilities
Chatham County Jail is the main local detention facility, and its Sheriff records document county exits. Coastal State Prison is a GDC medium-security prison whose releases use state records. Coastal Transition Center is a GDC transitional placement hosted by Coastal State Prison. Municipal holding can route a person to the county jail or to a municipal or Recorder's Court record. Federal and immigration custody require separate national systems.
